Lucky’s Good Fortune Continues

Wow this dog gets luckier all the time….

So last week, surgery estimates seemed to be spiraling upward as concerns mounted and, frankly, spirits wore a little thin.

Not Lucky’s, of course. He had a great week, hanging out at BuLogics and cheerfully destroying his supply of donated plush toys.

He’s filling out & looking good, too. He’s rather bullet-proof on these pain meds, and scoots expertly around the office on his three legs, visiting everyone.  He also seems to have discovered people-watching thru the glass doors on this busy corner at Ridge & Midvale. Not barking, just watching.

Every day, Felicite and Katelyn caught up while Dr. Patten worked to coordinate the procedure with the traveling vet who would perform it, hopefully, sometime in February.  If Lucky’s fund could double in time. If he could get the support he needed for aftercare.

As the “If’s” were mounting, Lucky’s tale reached Philadelphia’s suburbs — to Wayne, PA, where Dr. Dave Walker at Gateway Animal Hospital stepped forward to offer his immediate assistance.

Big thanks to BuLogics chairman Mirka Walczak, who not only helped facilitate Lucky’s new plan but she’s also putting her own dog in daycare next week to handle transport from pre-op testing to his first night home after surgery.

The best news is:  not only can Dr. Walker help Lucky quickly — his cost is almost already covered by Lucky’s GoFundMe account. For $1500, Lucky can have the leg-saving surgery he needs. Of course, he’ll also need meds, vaccinations, neutering and post op care, which brings his need to $2500. So close!

His left leg will come out of this a little bit shorter, but Lucky should be able to use the limb normally and without pain, after a brief healing period, 2 – 4 weeks.

Lucky’ll soon be back to his four-legged self! We’re so close to his goal, big thanks to East Falls’ dog-loving community for getting us so far, so quickly. Just one last push, and we can get this guy healed & home where he belongs.

UPDATE 1-30-15 (From Felicite Moorman):

Well, it’s been a journey!

Lucky Charlie is out of surgery and convalescing as, uhm, gracefully as possible! Seriously, he’s a little loopy.

That said, he is his usual ornery and loving self at heart. He may have stolen a treat or two while we underestimated his agility!

On to the cash…We have had more than a couple of people put down their credit cards, beyond their original pledges, to make sure we could spring Lucky Charlie from the vet today. You know who you are! We thank you! And if there are a few more people willing to DONATE a bit here and there…we’ll get you back!!!

SIDE NOTE: Many of you know that one of my own dogs had a vet emergency this week when he went through a plate glass window trying to play with an outside dog (though he suffered life-threatening injuries, he is on his own road to recovery). That bill has hampered my own ability to cover additional and unexpected costs so I’m EXTRA appreciative that I’m not doing Lucky Charlie’s challenges alone!!! To the people who took their time and money to make this village and save me the nervous (and financial) breakdown…THANK YOU!!!

UPDATE: 2-16-15 (From Felicite Moorman):

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
To everyone who gave time, money, treats and toys!
Due to some real creativity and awesome relationships on the part of those involved (Mirka and Teresa and more!), and some offline donations, we were able to complete Lucky Charlie’s Campaign Goals far shy of our financial goals.
Lucky Charlie is fully on the road to as complete a recovery as is possible and as happy as a dog can get!

As we close the campaign together, I’m inspired to share with you one of my favorite stories I share with naysayers!

A young man is walking along the ocean and sees a beach on which thousands and thousands of starfish have washed ashore. Further along he sees a man, walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean. “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?,” he asks. “Because the sun is up and the tide is going out and if I don’t throw them further in they will die.” “But, don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it! You can’t possibly save them all. You can’t even save one-tenth of them. In fact, even if you work all day, your efforts won’t make any difference at all.” The man listened calmly and then bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the sea.

“It made a difference to that one.”

You made this happen! You are the heroes! You saved a life!

And…It made a difference to that one!

Thank you! And love to you all!
