Happy birthday, Friends of McMichael Park! Here’s to twenty-five more years of care & guardianship, often in partnership with East Falls Tree Tenders, also celebrating a birthday (their 20th). Finally, McMichael’s turtle statue — a nod to our local Lenape tribe — turns fifty this year. Oh, the changes this guy has witnessed over the years in our little neck of the woods…

Check out Friends of McMichael Park’s Facebook page for galleries of past events, pics of current plantings & maintenance, and news on upcoming stuff like Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” this July.

Sunday Pack Walks start & finish at McMichael park, so we’re extra grateful so many neighbors work to provide such a wonderful space we can all enjoy. Thanks to Friends of McMichael Park, and to intrepid volunteer Christina Kistler,  who is at the helm of this year’s effort with Philly Parks & Rec, and Love Your Park:

“… The more hands we have, the more projects we can tackle and the faster the work will go. We take as little or as much time as people can give. There is always something to do.  The city will drop off mulch, bags for cleanup as well as some plants to put in for some color. We have a few formal beds at each corner, as well as the planting area around the volunteer tree that could use some attention.  Besides that, general twig pickup, trash pickup and leaf pile pickup from the winter debris collection is always needed.  So there is something for everyone! We will have some rakes, wheelbarrows for mulching and shovels on hand, but we ask people to bring rakes, gardening tools and gloves with them, if they can. “

Join the love fest at McMichael Park this Saturday! When you’ve had your fill of gardening here, pick up some plants to take home at the library’s Spring Sale, happening right up the street.
