Fresh Start at Fresh Cuts

Fresh Cuts’ Joseph Davis, and a crew of Philly barber pros, help local kids start the school year right.

The way Joe Davis sees it, a fresh start for kids going back to school requires a fresh look. “It gives the kids a boost to get their hair cut and look their best. It’s a confidence builder,” said Davis, owner of Fresh Cuts on Midvale.

For 34 lucky local kids, they got their boost free of charge (and school supplies to boot) on September 2nd during Fresh Cuts’ 5th annual Community Giveback.

What started as a favor from Joe to a local mother seeking donations has become an event that spans the East Falls and Allegheny communities, pulled in 9 barbers from the Philadelphia Barber School, and has even drawn the attention of State Representative Isabella Fitzgerald, who provided free bookbags for the Giveback.

Oh and don’t forget the CBS Philly and Channel 29 news crews that covered the event.

Even a light rain early that morning couldn’t stop the kids. Word of mouth spread too fast. “We started at 8AM and by 8:15 trucks and vans were rolling up full of parents and kids. By 8:30 we were jammed,” said Davis. Parents and friends told him about driving their neighborhoods picking up any kids they knew. “It’s kinda moving to hear that people got involved like that.”

Giving back is second nature to Davis, who’s been offering free haircuts in charity events the last few weeks in North Philadelphia and Nicetown. He does the same in East Falls because he wants to set a good example for kids. “I want to show them how giving back to the community makes it better for us all.”

What are his plans next year? “We want to make it bigger,” he said, “there’s always somebody else who needs it that we haven’t reached yet.”
