Mid-Winter Bird Census
Attention bird lovers! You can help document the incredible diversity of bird species in the Philadelphia area during the annual Philadelphia Mid-Winter Bird Census.
Local birdwatchers Winston Moody, Wendy Moody, and Phil Hineline will be identifying and counting birds in East Falls for the census and are asking residents to lend a hand.
If you are an East Falls resident with an active bird feeder, you can help in one of two ways:
- Contact Winston Moody (email@example.com or phone: 215-848-5131) before January 13th with your address so that the census takers may visit your feeder.
- Call on January 13th before 4PM with the number of each species of bird you observed on the day of the count only. You may leave a message on the machine.
This census in the only monitoring effort in which birds are counted throughout Philadelphia County what birds are present, where they are located, and how they change through the years, according to Keith Russell, Census Coordinator.
Since East Falls is situated on an edge of Fairmount Park, our area is vital to the census. In 2008 Fairmount Park was named an Important Bird Area (IBA) by the National Audubon Society. The park, a significant wildlife sanctuary, is one of 82 IBAs in Pennsylvania, the first state to recognize IBAs.
We appreciate the efforts of East Fallsers who provide winter food and water for birds. Happy sightings!
