New Zealanders find a touch of home in our ‘hood.

Where in the world is Kihikihi? You might not be familiar with the small town on the north island of New Zealand (FUN FACT: Kihikihi means “cicada” in the Māori language: the name imitates the sound made by the insect) — but there are plenty of New Zealanders who’ve heard about East Falls, thanks to the Merson family.  We encountered them in July at Billy Murphy’s, as they were grabbing lunch and planning the rest of their vacation in the States.

Back by popular demand: guided walks through the prettiest — and largest — green space in Philadelphia, right in our own backyard. Wisshickon Valley Park is 2,000+ acres featuring 70 wooded trails that can seem a little daunting at first.

No worries! We’ve broken our area down into 3 interlocking loops from nearby trailheads that you can follow yourself with our maps and info. Even better: come out with your neighbors for a different Wissahickon hike every month, and discover new sides to East Falls.

EFL Traveler: Grapefruit League Getaway

Beaches, baseball, & beautiful weather for longtime Fallsers at Spring Training.

While we were all wrapping our heads around snow on St. Patty’s, Fallsers Rich and Pattie Gardner of Bowman street were coping bravely with 75 plus degrees on the beaches of Clearwater and the lush green of Spectrum Field, the Phillies’ spring training facility. (So we wouldn’t forget their struggles, Rich texted us a few times from sunny Florida to ask how we were doing with the snow.)

Rich Lampert and Deborah Thorp of Coulter Street took an exotic vacation to Cuba (we’re so jealous!) and gave us the scoop on their Havana adventure.

Rich and Deborah take a pause from joyriding around Havana in some of Cuba’s legendary vintage cars. Hola, East Falls!

How’d they like the trip? And what’s with those cars?

Rich: This was our first trip to Cuba. We wanted to get there before McDonald’s did, so we signed up for a cultural, people-to-people tour through the Drexel Alumni Association when a brochure came in the mail. (I’m a Drexel grad.)

It took 10 years and three tries, but Ron Merriel of Blue Skies Chiropractic finally realized his dream to visit Ireland. His travel plans have been short-circuited over the years by jobs and his thriving practice on Scotts Lane, but came together last month out of the blue when his Irish stepfather, Declan decided he wanted to visit the Old Sod.
